There is a particular kind of wall art that does something to a room. Not the kind you stop noticing after a week. The kind that makes people stop when they walk in. The kind that starts a conversation. Or makes someone take a photo before they say hello.
That is what I make.
I am Marina, a maker based in Amsterdam. I make bold, handmade wall art from my studio: beaded panels and woven wall hangings. Each one is an original.
What handmade wall art actually means
People use the word "handmade" loosely. On my work it means something specific:
- Every beaded panel starts on a blank loom and ends as a finished piece, one Japanese glass bead at a time
- I place each row by hand: no machine, no shortcut
- A panel that fits in your palm can take several days to make
- I weave my wall hangings on a frame loom, thread by thread, using yarn chosen for colour and texture
They have weight, fringe, presence. They move slightly when you walk past. This is what handmade wall art looks like when one pair of hands makes it, in one studio, in Amsterdam.
Women's Work - when a piece carries an argument
Some of my pieces are about colour and joy. Others carry something else.
Women's Work is a beaded statement panel: white lettering in cross-stitch sampler style on a blood red ground. I set it in a hand-painted oval tray, repurposed as a frame. It reads: "It's craft until a man does it."
I made this piece because I believe an object can carry an argument and start one. The cross-stitch sampler is a deliberate choice. For centuries, women used this form to show their skill, their patience, their domestic virtue. They hung it on walls. People admired it. Nobody called it art.
The same work. The same hands. A different verdict depending on who held the needle.
This piece hangs on a wall and says so. If it started a dinner table argument, I'd genuinely like to know.
I consulted no men in the making of this piece. It came out fine anyway.

Not every wall needs a statement piece. But some walls do. And if yours is one of them, generic art from a high street shop will not cut it.

My studio is in Amsterdam. This city does something to the work. It has a particular relationship with colour: unexpected combinations, bold choices, a refusal of the safe option. I brought a Spanish sensibility with me when I moved here fifteen years ago. Amsterdam kept it and added its own light.
